Park first asked Kim how he viewed him as a senior performer and whether he had ever considered him a role model. Kim said younger people might regard Park as a veteran comedian, while he had grown up watching Park’s peak years from elementary school onward. When Park asked more directly whether Kim saw him as an older figure, Kim answered yes.
Park then asked how Kim had entered SNL and what the audition involved. Kim said he performed a free-form acting piece at his SNL audition. Kim drew on his part-time call-center work for the audition performance. He recalled an older customer who called regularly with complaints and said he had used that experience as the basis for the character.
At Park’s request, Kim recreated the character’s voice. The improvised caller complained about how long it took to reach an agent and about having to press several numbers. The scene also included demands over an order of mackerel and a complaint that ordered kimchi was too spicy. Those details were part of Kim’s performance. Park laughed, told Kim he acted well and said he himself was poor at acting. Park praised Kim’s acting after watching his improvised performance.
Kim responded that he was less comfortable with unscripted ad-libs than with the structured sketches he performs on SNL. Park answered with a joke about how that might affect their shoot. Their exchange followed Kim’s account of the audition and his recreation of the character he said he had performed there.
