Kim Gyu-won appeared on the YouTube channel Hal Myung Soo in an episode released on October 16 and sampled 15 side dishes with Park Myung-soo. Their conversation turned to Kim’s family and his audition experience. Kim Gyu-won said he still lives with his parents. When Park asked whether Kim had given them a card after winning an award, Kim corrected the timing. Kim Gyu-won said he gave his parents a card before receiving the award so they could comfortably pay when dining with friends.

Kim Gyu-won won the Best New Male Entertainer award for SNL Korea Season 8 at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards on July 31. Park jokingly asked whether Kim’s parents had been struggling financially before the win. Kim said they had not faced severe financial hardship, though they had not been especially well off. Park joked that his own mother uses a card he gave her to pay for meals, then collects the other diners’ shares in cash.

Kim said his parents might have a similar tendency, although they barely used his card at first. More recently, he said, they began asking when his recordings start and end and how long filming takes. Kim said he does not take his phone into a recording, and card charges appear during the hours he is filming. Park laughed at the connection between the questions about Kim’s schedule and the timing of the charges.

Kim Gyu-won said he based his improvisation at the SNL audition on his experience working part time as a call center agent. Asked to perform freely, he recalled an older caller who had contacted the center every day with complaints. During the episode, Kim imitated the caller’s voice and manner of speaking to demonstrate his audition performance. The character complained about having to press numbers in a phone menu instead of reaching an agent immediately. Park praised Kim’s acting and said he lacked confidence in his own.

Kim said he finds unscripted situations harder than performing a prepared sketch. Park responded with a joke about how that might affect their recording. Asked about Park, Kim said he had watched him since elementary school and regarded him as a living legend.
