Cartoonist Kian84 interviewed Tom Cruise in a video posted to the Insaeng84 YouTube channel on October 14. Cruise was visiting South Korea to promote Digger, which opened there on October 3. The video shows Kian84 preparing for their conversation and reflecting on the meeting afterward. Before they met, Kian84 described Cruise as the most famous person he had seen in his life.
Kian84 took an English conversation lesson and drew a picture to give Cruise. He said he had studied English for 1 hour that morning and had received tutoring from an elementary school student. Although he was told he could speak Korean if he became nervous, he wanted to use the English he had practiced. When the interview began, he could not continue his English self-introduction and introduced himself in Korean. Cruise smiled and encouraged him. Afterward, Kian84 said he wished he had used English instead of Japanese and regretted not asking Cruise about running.
Kian84 named Vanilla Sky and Interview with the Vampire as Cruise films he liked. He then asked what made Digger a distinctive project for Cruise. Cruise described his character as having many sides and said the film includes a 10-minute monologue shot in one take. He said playing those different sides was enjoyable and gave him a chance to test himself. Asked about dreams he had yet to fulfill, Cruise expressed gratitude for what he had accomplished and said he still enjoyed discovering new stories and learning.
After the interview, Kian84 gave Cruise the drawing he had made. Cruise thanked him and described Maggie as a character who helps Digger retain his humanity. Cruise later shared a photo of the drawing on social media. Digger follows a small crack at Digger Rockwell’s Greenland ice-drilling facility as it grows into a major disaster.
After meeting Cruise, Kian84 said he felt emotional and recalled meeting artist Junji Ito. He said he was happy to meet Cruise and felt he understood why Cruise was called a superstar. Kian84 also said that, although he was in his 40s, he still felt a youthful enthusiasm as a fan. He wished Cruise good health.
